ENT stands for Ear, Nose and Throat. These areas are often grouped together because they are physically connected by the sinuses. Often, a complaint in one area can cause complications or pain in another area.
Ear problems, such as hearing loss, Tinnitus, balance problems, or earache can cause extreme discomfort for the sufferer and can affect their quality of life and ability to work.
Ear infections are caused by bacteria building up in the middle or inner ear and can cause pain, balance problems, loss of hearing, fever, and pain. When these occur frequently, they are thought to be chronic. If left untreated, chronic ear infections can leave to loss of hearing.
Tinnitus is a common complaint and can be caused by prolonged exposure to loud noises, such as machinery. It is a roaring or a ringing in the ears which can be extremely annoying and unpleasant for the sufferer.
If ear complaints are not treated in young children, they can lead to delayed or repressed speech and loss of confidence or chronic shyness. In adults, they can result in chronic pain and hearing loss.
Nose problems can restrict breathing, making everyday activities such as walking and working, more difficult and tiring, and can affect a person’s sense of taste and smell. They can also lead to snoring and sleep apnoea, affecting the quality of the suffers’ life and overall health. Sleep apnoea , in particular, can be quite dangerous and can lead to complications further down the line.
Common nose complaints include nasal polyps, which are small pearl like swellings in the lining of the nose, broken nose, and rhinosinusitis. These can often be fixed by simple surgery, improving the quality of life and overall health of the patient.
The throat houses the voice box, tonsils, oesophagus, windpipe, and the thyroid gland. Throat issues are very common in children, as their tonsils are often larger to prevent them from swallowing poisonous or harmful objects, which means strep throat can occur frequently and can often be severe. However, it is quite common for adults to get strep throat or tonsillitis too. Many people advocate the removal of the tonsils prevent recurring episodes.
